With the average Briton creating more than half a tonne of waste each year, packaging specialist The Packaging Store, is taking a stand against waste and encouraging other firms to go green for a brighter future. Journalist Tina Clough investigates…

Only 27 per-cent of the waste we create in the UK gets recycled creating implications not only for environment but for future generations. The issue is slowly being tackled by the Government in the form of advice and in support of many supermarkets cutting back on polythene bags, but still packaging companies exist that do little to reduce waste.

Jake Kirk, operations manager at the firm which specialises in pallet wrap, polythene bags, and boxes, said, ‘The UK is still playing catch up with many of the other European countries, in terms of how much they recycle and much more should be done do combat this. ‘Removal boxes are one of our most popular products and as such this is one of several key products we have worked to improve the green credentials of’.

‘This is why here at The Packaging Store, we are taking a stand to show other companies that environmental issues should be taken seriously and that there are things that can be done within the industry to reduce global warming. Biodegradable packaging made from starch or corn rather than plastic, is a great idea, as it breaks away from the tradition of using plastics, but one of our main products at the present time is the ‘envirobox’.

Developed in association with WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) in an effort to reduce the amount of packaging ending up in landfill, the ‘envirobox’ replaces the traditional double wall box, using materials that are seven per-cent lighter. The manufacturing process used to create the box results in a huge saving of 30 per-cent in CO2 emissions, without compromising on strength.

Mr Kirk, from the firm which is now one of the fastest growing suppliers of cardboard boxes, pallet wrap and other packaging items, added, ‘Another one of our core products here at The Packaging Store, is our bubble wrap, so it made sense to create a new version of this that was environmentally friendly. The new version, is now made from recycled materials, which is also fully reusable without any fear of degrading. It has been so popular, that we are now offering any customers who buy two or more packs of our five pack rolls of small bubble wrap, the chance to get an extra pack free. It just goes to show that customers love green products.’ For more information on any of the innovative solutions available from The Packaging Store, please visit http://www.thepackagingstore.co.uk.
